“Helping, Fixing, or Serving” by Rachel Naomi Remen

Updated: Mar 12, 2019

Do you think that there is a difference between the terms helping, fixing, and serving? Or are they synonymous?

The author of the article views helping as having a harmful power dynamic between helper and the helped. Helping can affect self-esteem and self-worth. In fixing, we assume there is a problem/something broken.

“From the perspective of service, we are all connected: All suffering is like my suffering and all joy is like my joy. The impulse to serve emerges naturally and inevitably from this way of seeing...Service is a relationship between equals: our service strengthens us as well as others.” - Remen
